Position Sizing
Position sizing decides how much capital each trade gets. It determines an account’s survival more than entry timing does: the right signal at the wrong size still blows up.
Most people pour everything into “what to buy and when” and leave “how much” to gut feel. The order is exactly backwards: the signal sets a single trade’s expectancy, but sizing decides how that expectancy compounds — or detonates — on your equity curve. A positive-expectancy system with uncontrolled sizing still ends at zero.
The mainstream methods, from simple to refined: fixed-fractional (risk no more than 1%–2% of the account per trade — position = risk budget ÷ stop distance), volatility-adjusted (smaller size on wilder symbols so each trade contributes equal risk), and fractional Kelly (derive the theoretical optimum from edge and odds, then discount it). The shared core is one sentence: fix the amount you can lose first, then back out the size.
Size should also breathe with conditions: full standard size when confidence is high (multi-factor resonance, macro tailwind); reduced when evidence is torn or macro opposes; and deliberate de-leveraging after consecutive losses — the only reliable circuit breaker for the lose–double-up–blow-up death spiral.
In CycleMaster’s workflow, cycle state is a natural size dial: Uptrend with positive resonance maps to standard size, range states to light probing size, Downtrend to standing aside or hedging. The system supplies the confidence tiers; sizing discipline translates them into exposure.
FAQ
The common consensus is 1%–2% of account equity per trade: even ten straight losses cap the damage at 10%–20%, keeping both capital and composure in the game. Above 5% per trade, a short losing streak puts you in drawdown territory that is mathematically brutal to climb out of.
Full Kelly is nearly unusable in practice: estimation error in the inputs produces violent swings and intolerable drawdowns. Practitioners typically run quarter- to half-Kelly, trading some theoretical growth for survival probability.
