Golden Cross & Death Cross
A golden cross is a short-term moving average crossing above a long-term one; a death cross is the opposite. Classic trend-turn signals — but weak on their own, and much stronger filtered by cycle state.
When a short-term average (say, 50-day) crosses above a long-term one (say, 200-day), that is a golden cross — read as the trend turning bullish; the downward cross is a death cross. The logic is plain but solid: short-term momentum has become strong (or weak) enough to change its relationship with the long-term trend.
The built-in flaws are lag and range-market failure. By the time averages cross, the move is often well underway; and in trendless ranges the averages intertwine, generating alternating crosses that slap you in both directions — the main source of losses for this signal family.
The fix is filtering: only take crosses that agree with the higher-timeframe trend. A daily golden cross inside a weekly Uptrend is a materially better bet than the identical cross inside a weekly Downtrend — same signal, completely different expected value depending on the environment.

Over long samples, classic-parameter golden crosses show positive expectancy on strongly trending symbols, with plenty of drawdowns and false signals; on choppy symbols they are close to random. Verdict: worth watching, not worth buying blind — the filter decides the outcome.
There is no magic pair. Shorter means more signals and more noise; longer means steadier but later. Rather than tuning parameters, fix a standard pair (like 50/200) and spend the effort on trend-environment filtering — the payoff from environment beats parameter tweaks by a wide margin.
